Joseph and Magda Goebbels weren’t your every day grunt Nazis, Joseph had been Hitler’s best friend. Matter of fact, the 6 Goebbels children all had names beginning with H, to honor Hitler. Helga was 12, Hildegard was 11, Helmut was 9, Holdine was 8, Hedwig was 6, and the youngest was 4 year old Heidrun.
In the end, the Goebbels and Hitler were all together in the bunker. The children brought the Nazi leader joy during those final days as they sang with unsuspecting, cheerful voices and reenacted plays; in turn Hitler treated them with chocolates and allowed them to play with his beloved dog, Blondi.
When the end was imminent, many Nazi children were sent abroad to safety. A German red cross leader begged for permission to take the Goebbels children to safety, but this plea was denied.
The Goebbels thought it better to just kill their 6 children; their mother had planned the children’s demise at least a month in advance. She said it would be better for them to die than to live “without their Fuehrer to lead and guide them”.
On May 1st of 1945, right after Hitler’s death, it was the children’s turn; an SS doctor by the name of Helmut Kunz was pre-ordered by Hitler himself to help end the children. The kids were told they must be given shots, immunizations, because they were going to be staying in the bunker for a long time. They were shot up with morphine by the doctor, then their mother dosed them orally with cyanide. As we have discussed in prior articles, cyanide is absolutely not a pleasant way to go.
The oldest child, Helga, must’ve sensed something horrible was a brewing, she woke up and tried her best to fight off her killers. There were bruises on the child, especially her face, and she had suffered a broken jaw before her death. Just imagine her horror when she realized what was going on, that her own mama was fighting to murder her.
Once the children were deceased, it is said that their mother cried a bit, but then went on to play some cards before committing suicide herself.
The childrens corpses were found two days later, their parents remains were found nearby. Joseph had shot Magda, then himself. There was another, much older (& luckier) child who was not of the marriage; that child survived.
This just goes to show how merciless the Nazis were. They had a choice to save their own children’s lives yet decided to murder them nonetheless. It’s cruel; no matter the sins their parents were responsible for, they were just innocent children. That said, we should never forget that what this was practically a walk in the park in comparison of the torture other kids went through at the hands of the Nazis.

*You may notice that I post often about Nazi Germany, and I’ve been accused of being a Nazi sorry supporter which couldn’t possibly be further from the truth! My paternal great grandparents, named Bowman, were Jews who fled Nazi Germany when Hitler first began rounding up my ancestors. They came through Ellis Island and made great lives for themselves here. But countless family members of mine were left behind, tortured, and murdered by these monsters! That explains my obsession.
